Dr. Shahzad Ahmad
Dr. Shahzad Ahmad has performed more RFA procedures than any other endocrinologist in the United States — more than 1,200 cases to date, with a complication rate of just 0.2%.
He performed the first successful North American RFA procedures on a parathyroid tumor and the first North American RFA of a medullary thyroid cancer recurrence, and was the first physician in the United States to perform RFA on a toxic (hyperfunctioning) thyroid nodule.
Dr. Ahmad completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in Englewood, New Jersey, followed by an Endocrinology fellowship at Harbor-UCLA. His clinical focus is the diagnosis and medical treatment of thyroid dysfunction, nodules, and cancer. He has also served as an Assistant Professor at the University of San Francisco School of Medicine.
He is ECNU certified — a credential awarded to endocrinologists with demonstrated expertise in thyroid ultrasound and procedures — and is a Certified Interventional Endocrinologist (CIE). Dr. Ahmad currently serves as President-Elect of the North American Society of Interventional Endocrinologists (NASOIE).
A recognized leader in advancing percutaneous thyroid ablation in North America, Dr. Ahmad has published more than 10 original peer-reviewed papers on RFA. He was among the first to bring the technique to the United States, training extensively on tissue models, with his earliest cases observed by the STARmed team from Korea under the guidance of RFA pioneer Dr. Jung Hwan Baek of Seoul, South Korea
