Dr. Shahzad Ahmad's Thyroid Cancer Ablation Research Accepted for Publication

We're proud to share that Dr. Shahzad Ahmad's latest research, co-authored with Dr. Sean Nikravan, has been accepted for publication in Clinical Medicine Insights: Endocrinology and Diabetes.

The study looks at radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a minimally invasive, needle-based procedure, as a treatment option for select patients with low-risk papillary thyroid cancer, performed right in the outpatient clinic. For eligible patients, this can mean avoiding surgery altogether while still effectively treating the cancer, with a quicker recovery and no incision.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of thyroid nodules is a non-mainstream treatment option for benign thyroid nodules. Studies in Asia and Europe (1) have demonstrated RFA to be an effective outpatient alternative to surgery, however, these results have not been reproduced in North America. Hypothesis: RFA of symptomatic benign thyroid nodules can reduce morbidity associated with thyroidectomies, without sacrificing favorable clinical outcomes.
